Emergency Procedures

For fire or general emergency

Ring 000

This can be done for all types of emergencies. Emergency services will contact Sutton Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade if they are required.

To contact the Sutton Rural Fire Brigade Duty Officer directly

Ring 0418 303 232

This is the appropriate course to report a minor bushfire or grass fire within the Sutton Volunteer Rural Fire Brigade area or to notify that you are conducting a burnoff.

If you are in an emergency situation

  • Keep calm and speak clearly when reporting the event.
  • Give precise details as to the nature and location of the emergency.
  • If the emergency is a fire threatening your property, put on appropriate clothes, long trousers and long sleeves in a flame retardant fabric such as wool, and solid footwear.
  • Close all doors and windows to your house. Block up gutters and fill them with water. Ensure that firefighting equipment is to hand and ready for use. Fill a bath with water and have blankets and towels ready to protect yourself and your family if it gets really hot.
  • Ensure you have a safe and clear exit route to evacuate if necessary.
  • Follow all instructions given by all emergency personnel, including Rural Fire Brigade volunteers.
  • Indicate to any firefighting units on your property the location and access to water sources such as dams or household tanks.
  • If a fire goes through your property, the passage of the front may be swift. After it has gone through, check for and extinguish any spot fires or hot spots. Damage is often done by these igniting later, after the main front has passed.
Of course, this is all much less traumatic if you are already prepared through the practice of FIRE SAFETY on your property.
