Long Service Awards

On Sunday 14th April 1996 a group of our longest serving volunteers was recognised, coinciding with the opening of the new truck shed. The presentation was made by Mr Barry Belt, Regional Co-ordinator for the Southern Region, who has visited us or presented things to our volunteers on a number of occasions. Several of the members being honoured were founding members of the brigade.

Receiving their National Medals and 35 year Long Service Awards on the day were founding members Bill Cartwright, Stan Bingley and Ken Hardy. Absent on the day due to illness was Frank Hallam, but he received his National Medal and 35 year Long Service award at a later ceremony in June. Bill and Frank are former presidents of the brigade, while Ken served as captain for many years. Joan Hardy received a 25 year Long Service award for her continuing endeavours over many years manning (womanning?) the communications and providing backup support. Stan's sons, James and Geoff Bingley, received their 15 year long service awards. We can proudly relate that the various branches of the Bingley clan continue to support the brigade with some 3rd generation members recently undertaking their Basic training.

Joan Hardy seems quite overcome with her award.

Ken Hardy and Barry Belt find something hilarious in the proceedings.

Frank Hallam

A special award was presented to Pat and Judy Harriden for their extensive and varied contributions to the brigade over they years. Pat is a former captain and Group North leader while Judy has been a firefighter and a backroom worker for many years. The presentation was no hint that they are retiring from their endeavours in the brigade though. Pat is still our Training Officer and Judy is our Food Controller and we anticipate that they will be very busy with us for a long long time to come.

Judy and Pat look suitably embarrassed while Bob Allison extolls their achievements.

By cunning co-ordination with a network of spies, just as the presentations were complete our local Pony Club clopped up in force to mount a guard of honour and present a framed certificate of congratulation to the brigade in honour of the award recipients. The truck fleet was arrayed in splendour outside the station. A large contingent of people from the community and district was present and generally it was a truly celebrationary occasion. The formalities were followed by a barbecue lunch to christen the shed and a great deal of reminiscing about the way fire brigading has changed. It's a pity we didn't have a few hidden tape recorders. I bet we could have brought you some good war stories via RealAudio.
