History of our Brigade

Sutton Bush Fire Brigade was formed in 1949. A few local farming families armed with simple equipment and vehicles got together and looked after each other in situations of fire emergency. Several of our founding members are still involved with the brigade, as well as their offspring unto the third generation.
While they have been in many fire and emergency incidents over the years, the biggest events were in 1979 and 1985 when large fires swept the district, and of course the major regional emergency of January and February 2003. In recent years, more traffic on the Federal Highway between Canberra and Sydney, which bisects our district, has meant that an increasing proportion of incidents involve attendance at motor vehicle accidents. this is a part of the work that we could happily do without, so please go easy on the right foot if you drive through our patch. Motor vehicle accident

We could happily do with less of these.

With the recent reorganization of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service our brigade, like all others in the state, is undergoing major changes. We are now the Sutton Rural Fire Brigade. We have big red trucks and yellow uniforms, but the same dedicated volunteers keep the whole thing going. Change is difficult, and many issues are under constant discussion, but if we all keep talking, and listening, we will have a better, safer service without losing any of our history or tradition.

I could tell you lots more interesting yarns and tales from our brigade history, but I'm not going to, as there is a much better way to learn about it. A local author, Margaret Ferrett, has put it all into a book, Serving the Community, produced for our 50th anniversary celebrations. So you can purchase a modestly priced copy and read it yourself.
