Serving the Community |

| "Bill was 21 when he attended his first fire on the Bingley property in 1947. This fire had also been started by a wood carter lighting a fire to boil his billy. When the fire fighters arrived on the scene, the first thing Mr Bingley (Stan's father) did was "job" (punch) the perpetrator. As Bill said, 'It's better to put out a fire than light one. No one would think of punching you for extinguishing a fire.' " | ||||||||||
| The above extract is just one of the many good stories in Margaret Ferrett's "Serving the Community: A History of Sutton Bush Fire Brigade 1949-1999". There are also photographs historic and recent, statistics, technical data and information about the fire brigade and the history of the district. If you have lived in Sutton for a while, you probably get a mention in there somewhere. If you live in a rural community, you will probably find we have much in common. If you are interested in volunteer organizations generally, there is plenty of food for thought here with the anecdotes of courage and devotion to duty of those who don't get paid for it. The book was officially launched at the brigade's 50th anniversary celebrations in 1999 with Mr Barry Belt of the New South Wales Rural Fire Service. | ![]() |
